As with all resistance, it should begin with a focus, with a goal based on increasing freedom. Every action you take as a leaderless freedom fighter should be measured against the cause you’re fighting for. In a sense, you have an even greater responsibility as a one-person revolutionary than you would as a member of a group because you have to look yourself in the mirror and answer to yourself for everything you do.
Onward
With that, we move on to a few strictly hardcore forms of individual resistance. Some of these are perfectly legal but require an enormous commitment. Others are perfectly illegal and as always, done at your own risk.
We stress again that we do NOT advocate any specific activities. We are NOT telling you that you should or must adopt any particular tactic. We acknowledge that illegal or dangerous actions may be necessary for some people at some times and in some places, but that’s a matter for individual choice. We absolutely do NOT advocate aggressive or retaliatory violence and hope violence is never necessary in the cause of restoring freedom.
Hardcore Individual Resistance
Illegal Tax Resistance
When creating a small, simple, tax-avoiding life is not enough for you, there’s always the advanced methods: not filing at all or “cheating” on your taxes so you pay less. (We must add that we don’t see how it can be cheating to keep your own earnings; but the IRS differs and in this matter their voice is more powerful than ours.)
If you’re going to go the non-filing method, you’d better have a good way of both working under the table and keeping your earnings stashed under that table, too. Avoid bank accounts, credit cards, and other trackable, eternally reported trails of monetary bread crumbs.
Whichever method you choose, the key is: Be Smart. The people you hear about getting busted are often the ones who claim an income of $25k while living in oceanfront homes and driving Teslas. Don’t be that person .
Tax resistance has a long and impressively all-American tradition. You can look it up. Beyond that we’re not going to say.
Run an Intelligence Network, Underground Railroad, or Underground Economy
Want a bit more civic engagement in your individual resistance? How about running a private intelligence network or simply being a source of intelligence for an existing network? This can be a fine thing for an Outlaw Mole, quietly gathering information via your job or your political connections and passing it along into the deeper underground. [32]
Or what about an underground railroad? That could be something like the railroad of the 19th century that helped spirit escaped slaves into Canada. You could be spiriting away hunted activists or freedom seekers who’ve run afoul of some obscure regulation or another. Or your underground railroad could be a network of supplies—banned goods, overly regulated goods, goods that are hard to get (e.g. pharmaceuticals from Canada; vented gas cans—we’re only half joking about that one—controlled chemicals; food for underground resisters). Many, many possibilities.
Yes, in these cases you’re working with other people.
